... nothing against a christian based movie (on the contrary, being a christian I welcome them), but that was ridiculously short, pure and simple. And not particulary polished or well made. Give it a bit more effort before you submit a flash like that to the portal.

Jaiba responds:

Next one will be more interesting, the first chapter laid out the plot. Next one will most likely have voices!

...

... honestly, that wasn't badly drawn, but a one second long animation? I'm sorry, but the only thing I can point out as criticism in a second long animation is that it is too short for anything, including detailed criticism.

Van-pl responds:

Next time i'll make full documentation and will make it longer :)

... I'm honestly beginning to feel that your work is fast becoming very underapreciated, Skaijo! This is fantastic stuff and deserves way more attention than it currently has and a better score is also very important. But let's get detailed.

- Graphics and animation were very good. Actually, scratch that, they were excelent all round and I must say that your animation of action scenes has improved immensly from Pick Up: Act 2! It really is much better now, very fluid and well done. This aspect alone deserves top marks!

- The music was bizzare, funny and good all at the same time and the coordenation between song and the on screen action was absolutly spot on / perfect. And because the music changes pace alot, it had good breaks from the action.

- The action scenes were clever and interesting, the humour was pretty good (and made me smile =] ), the attention to detail was really high (dancing puppies = fun!) and the overall polish and production values of the movie was great!

So, overall, you made a great movie, both funny and interesting that deserved oodles of praize and kudos! 'Grats! And please keep making such great stuff, you are a consistently awsome flash artist!

Skaijo responds:

There are A LOT of under appreciated artists on Newgrounds; I may not even be qualified to join that group. That said, I'm having fun doing what I like to do, score or no score. I'm already fleshing out a sequel. xD

I appreciate the review. Usually when something is written so detailed, it really inspires me to keep on moving. It'd be nice if you threw in some things you didn't like that way I'll know where I need to improve. If you'd like to PM me with some critiques, I'd love that too.

Either way, I'm very appreciative of the review. Thanks for the love!

... I hate to say this, but your animation was a big let down. This is because your drawing skills are top notch, as can be attested by all the characters being very detailed and well drawn. The pacing of the movie was also pretty good, as was the voice acting (although the sound effects were only adequate) and the camerawork was specially good! In fact, together with your drawings, it was the best of the movie. Oh, and the movie was slightly short and the story, although slightly clichéd, was interesting enough that I'm curious as to what's going to happen next.

However, the animation was, as far as I could tell, all tweens and not very well done tweens at that. I hate to concentrate on the negative, but this is where you really need to improve your efforts. For example, the shape tweens you used to animate Alex's face during her conversation was pretty obvious and disjarring, as was the motion tweens you used to animate the action.

So, if you improve this crucial aspect, I can see this series really coming along nicely! Otherwise, it feels a bit of letdown... Still, cheers for a nice start to a new series!

i know. i'm going to work on it. i i know. don't let it let u down. i tried really hard. and i've gone through hell to do this, i've had the idea since last summer and i've been working really hard. i appreciate your constructive criticism but what did u like about it? i'm trying to be original. NG will never be satisfied.

...

... well the humour aspect was started poorly (the first two scenes), but more than made then made up for it from the episode 1 onwards, when it's pretty dammed funny!

Technically it's a mixed bag, with pretty good drawings and solid animation, proper use of sound effects, but you really need to get better voice acting! The voice actors you used were pretty poor and it really detracted from the movie (you should go to the NG forums and search for the voice acting club, they have some solid voice actors over there).

So overall, pretty well made and funny, but with a naggling detail (the voices) that took away some of the movie's thunder.

Arkuni responds:

I agree, I have a lot to learn about voice acting (which was why I didn't want anyone to do it for me).
This was mostly a learning process and a tribute to my favorite games.

I wanted to try out new things like: Voice acting, Action Scripted graphic and other minor things.

...

... I'm a bit lost for words here.

I mean, I could write about just how brilhant you and you're animations are, but that seems almost unecessary, not only because there are certain "self evident truths", which require no speaking.

For example, I could say your animation technique and drawings skills are is so good that I could watch a single waterfall drawn and animated by you for hours on end, but again, it's kind of pointless, you must certainly know this sort thing already.

Or how your characters are incredibly well developed and styled, in a way that they create genuine empathy and emotions from the viewers, something so hard to do in our thick skinned society. Not a small part of this is because of the fantastic music you use.

I really could, in all honesty and with all sincerity, write more paragraphs upon paragraphs on just fantastic experience Waterlollies was, whilst finding it very, very hard to produce anything to criticise (which any good review should, ideally, have, but sadly this one won't). In the end, all this praise would be slightly pointless, since I all I would be saying are things that are obviously true and I wouldn't be able to provide critisims to help you improve.

So, instead, what I will say is thank you. Thank you for continuing to produce such wonderful animations that are much beyond anything else that I know of. They really cheer me up and create a sense of wonder and excitement that I rarely feel now a days, but I used to feel alot when I was but a child.

chluaid responds:

thanks for taking the time to review this. I'm glad you liked it :)

... one big problem here: length! This is simply too short. It was decently animated, had adequate drawings and was mildly (but very mildly) humorous. But it barely lasted 10 seconds! It also didn’t have any but the most rudimentary of plots, but that’s not such a big deal. Try to expand your idea somehow and you should make it through the portal. You have some potential.

Imacow responds:

Thanks, this was for a collab so it was kinda short.

... good flash, (possibly) horrible message. What do I mean by that? Well, let's start with the "good flash" part first. The technical aspects of this flash were pretty good, it had nice animation and was pretty well drawn, the overall use of sound and music was great (nice choice of retro-cartoon-music-of-doom, by the way), with the voice acting being particulary good. It was the right length too, neither too short that it dosen't get out is message, nor too long that it becomes boring. All in all, it managed to acomplish it's purpose really well!

But, and here comes the down part, not all is roses with this flash. Now, I don't want to get in a debate here, since the space available is small and I can't reply to you anyway and, most importantly, I'll openly admit that my knowlegde on the subject is pretty small (basicly an article in the Economist).

Nether-the-less, if I understood the message presented here (and I may have got it wrong, in which case I apolagise profusly for all this), this candidate belives that insurance companies are increasing premiuns and discounts in the Florida area and that state legislation should intervene to help them out.

If (and only if) that's what he belives, then, quite frankly, he's wrong. For years now, resident's in Florida have been subsidied by the rest of the USA by paying less on their insurance than they should, because they live in a catastrophe area and state legislation regulates the amount they pay on their insurance. This has encouraged overbuilding and overpopulation in the region, far more than should have happend, meaning that in the case of a disaster, not only are more people affected, but also the insurance companies have less cash to hand out to pay their costumers. That means someone has to pay the bill afterwards, usually the federal goverment (so that the rest of the US picks up the bill).

So, if insurance companies are finally increasing (one way or another) the amount of money people have to pay for their insurance in the region, that's actually a good thing, as it will help correct the current situation by making it more expensive. Now, of course, this raises costs to those already living in Florida considerably and it's more that reasonable that people feel it's an injustice unto them that this is hapenning and feel the need for goverment intervention.

But any goverment intervention should not maintain the problems of incentives that currently exist (as the candidate seems to be proposing), else when the next big hurricane strikes, almost every one (including the rest of the US) will be worse off, except the lucky people in Florida that aren't (deeply) affected by the hurricane.

<whew>

As I said, I'm making quite a lot of assumptions here, so if they are wrong, please feel free to correct me (and, in such case, I once again apoligize). And I probably wrote more than I should in any case (after all, I don't even live in the US!) and I'm acutally favourable of more independent candidates running in the US anyway. So cheers for a well made and pretty good (except-for-the-message part) movie!

BadMonkeyStudios responds:

Gotta take this one on. First of all there isn't a state in the union that isn't underthreat of total disaster. Hurricanes hit from Texas to Florida and then up through New York. "overpopulated" California is hit by earthquakes without warning. The entire midwest is constantly being destroyed by flood anf tornado. There's no place more subsidized than anywhere else.

Plus, Linn intends on stopping those with houses worth over $1 million from getting government insurance especially if they build on dangerous waterfront areas. Message solid.

...

... that was pretty good, but I must make one criticism before the compliments: it was simply too repetitive. The problem lies not with the music, which certainly is repetitive (but not really a problem, since a lot of modern music is and we're all pretty much used to this kind of thing), and instead lies with the repeated use of the same animations, over and over again. It's ok for the first 3/4 of the movie, but afterwards it gets tiresome. My suggestion would be for you to take a look a Walk-Smash-Walk, a movie that is also incredibly repetitive, but thanks to the changing backgrounds and other subtle (or not so subtle) changes, is much more interesting.
Technically, the music was interesting and different, the drawings, whilst simple, where very well animated (and a big kudos by using a filmed sequence from CS and integrating it very well with the movie, even if the quality of the movie was somewhat poor) and it certainly was very well timed (the animation and music), which can be tough to accomplish. Over all, I would try to mix things up a bit more, it would help the movie out quite a bit, especially since it has quite a few merits.

StealthBeast responds:

lol kinda funny how people find the scenes repetative. the only scene that exactley repeats itself more then like 15 times is the scene of the guy w/ the UMP getting shot XD

Thanks for all the compliments, and the review itself!

...

... not a bad little parody. I mean, it obviously didn't take too much effort to accomplish and it isn't exactly "original", but it did bring a smile to my face (which, admittedly, isn’t so hard to achieve). Technically, it was well animated, with very precise timing between the animation and the sound, even if the drawings were very simple. It's strange really, normally I would probably be more critical of such a simple movie like this one, but because it’s well executed, I can't really find fault in it.

RupeeClock responds:

What parody dare I say, is totally original in it's own right?

Thanks for the advice, and I have no idea what the hell happened to your ''''''s...

it’s =/= it's
